SEMİNER ÖZETİ

This research examined similarities and differences between personal and vicarious life stories of romantic couples by focusing on narrative coherence and the motivational themes of agency and communion. Across two studies (Study 1: N = 314, Mage = 25.61, SD = 4.33; Study 2: N = 238, Mage = 21.11, SD = 1.06), Turkish young adults in heterosexual romantic relationships narrated both their own life stories and vicarious life stories of their partners. Participants also reported their perceptions of why their partners shared vicarious memories with them. Across both studies, narrative coherence, agency, and communion in personal life stories were positively associated with these same features in vicarious life stories. However, personal narratives were consistently more coherent and higher in agency and communion than vicarious narratives. Gender differences emerged such that women scored higher than men in narrative coherence and communion both in personal and vicarious stories (Studies 1 and 2), in agency of personal (Study 2) and vicarious stories (Studies 1 and 2). No gender differences were observed in reasons for sharing vicarious memories. Exploratory results of Study 2 revealed that relationship happiness did not play a moderator role in the association between personal and vicarious life stories. Together, these findings highlight both similarities and differences between personal and vicarious life stories for romantic partners and underscore the role of gender in narrative processes.
