The tenth edition of the “Meeting of Successful Academics with the Rector,” a tradition organized by the Bursa Uludağ University (BUÜ) R&D Coordination Office, has been held.
The program, held in Rectorate Hall B, was attended by Rector Prof. Dr. Ferudun Yılmaz, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İrfan Kırıştıoğlu, R&D Coordinator Prof. Dr. Esra Karaca, as well as deans, department heads, and academic and administrative staff.
“WE WILL UNLEASH OUR POTENTIAL”
Rector Prof. Dr. Ferudun Yılmaz congratulated the academics for their ongoing contributions to the university, stating that a significant dynamism and momentum has been achieved in project and publication culture, beginning at the student level. He explained that limiting the meeting to Q1 publication authors, project owners, and patent holders serves as a representative threshold aimed at highlighting scale and promoting excellence. Rector Yılmaz emphasized notable increases in external project funding and academic performance, announcing that, according to 2024 figures, Q1 publications have increased by 50% and total publications by more than 20%. He stated that their medium-term goal is to close the performance gap with peer universities in the second tier and rise to the middle of that group with the 2025 data. Yılmaz thanked the academics for carrying this success and urged them to maintain their momentum.
“CUMULATIVE IMPROVEMENT HAS SPREAD ACROSS ALL UNITS”
Vice Rector Prof. Dr. İrfan Kırıştıoğlu began by sincerely congratulating all academics, noting that they closely monitor the university’s academic performance and are pleased that, with two months left in the year, last year’s numbers have already been reached. One of the most encouraging indicators, he said, is the enormous increase in TÜBİTAK 2209 student-oriented project applications, which reached 634. He highlighted that these numbers once began in the twenties, and this dramatic rise shows that both students and faculty are becoming increasingly engaged in research and scientific work. He added that what initially concentrated in Engineering has now spread across all units, indicating the formation of a strong research-focused academic culture. Prof. Dr. Kırıştıoğlu thanked all staff on behalf of the institution for their contributions to the university’s publication performance and academic visibility.
“Q1 PUBLICATION COUNT INCREASED BY 50%, AVERAGE REACHED 30”
R&D Coordinator Prof. Dr. Esra Karaca stated that the Q1 publication count for September, previously announced as 40, actually rose to 50 upon further review in the Web of Science (WOS). She noted that the average number of Q1 publications, which had been in the twenties earlier in the year, has now reached around 30. Karaca shared that by the end of the ten events held so far, the total number of Q1 publications produced at the university has reached 336, with 322 of them published in 2023 alone. She emphasized that, with two months left in 2024, the university has already surpassed last year’s Q1 publication count, marking a 50% increase compared to 2023. She concluded by explaining that project data are monitored through the Strategy Department and patent data through the TTO based on registered certificates, and that the respective project and patent owners were invited accordingly. She congratulated everyone once again.
