1 MILLION TONS OF TEXTILE WASTE PER YEAR!
In her opening speech, Prof. Dr. Esra Karaca, the R&D Coordinator, stated that the purpose of the panel was to raise awareness. She mentioned that during the panel, which was organized in collaboration with the R&D Coordination Office and the Waste Management Center, the audience would hear from leading figures in the industry: "Every year, approximately 100 billion garments are sold worldwide. However, 85% of these products end up in landfills, and only 1% can truly be recycled from textile to textile. Turkey is one of the largest textile and ready-made clothing producers in the world. This brings a great responsibility, but it should also be seen as a major opportunity. As of 2023, it is estimated that approximately 1 million tons of textile waste are generated annually in Turkey. For this, we need to raise awareness among both consumers and producers. We thank everyone who contributed to this program," she said.
The panel, moderated by Prof. Dr. Esra Karaca, featured speakers such as Fatma Uray, Sustainability Manager at Altınsu Tekstil, Mahmut Özdemir, Co-Founder of Oberron, and Elif Berrak Taşyürek, Trade Expert at the Ministry of Trade.
During the event, Dilek Tüzem, Vice President of the Uludağ Art Association, and her team also performed a mini concert. The program concluded with the exhibition and booths being visited by the attendees.
