Lisans eğitimini 1986'da Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi psikoloji bölümünde, doktora eğitimini 1992'de Dartmouth College'da bilişsel psikoloji alanında tamamlamıştır. 1986-1988 yılları arasında Purdue Üniversitesi'nde araştırma ve öğretim asistanlığı, 1988-1991 yılları arasında Dartmouth College'da öğretim asistanlığı yapmış olan Prof. Dr. Hasan Gürkan Tekman, 1992'den 2005'e kadar Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi'nde yardımcı doçentlik, doçentlik ve profesörlük pozisyonlarında bulunmuştur. Uludağ Üniversitesi Psikoloji Bölümü'ne tam zamanlı olarak Ekim 2005'te katılmıştır. 2011-2013 yılları arasında Yaşar Üniversitesi Psikoloji Bölümü'nde görev yapan Prof. Tekman, 2012-2013 Eğitim-Öğretim Yılı Bahar döneminde bölümümüzde yarı zamanlı olarak ders vermiş, 2013-2014 Eğitim-Öğretim Yılı itibarıyla da tam zamanlı öğretim üyesi olarak akademik kadromuza yeniden dahil olmuştur.
Prof. Dr. Gürkan Tekman'ın Psychonomic Society, European Society for Cognitive Psychology ve European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music adlı bilimsel derneklerin üyesidir. Dil, bellek ve algı alanlarında çalışan Prof. Dr. Gürkan Tekman'ın armoni algısı, müzik tarzları ve tercihleri, sözel bellek gibi konularda araştırmaları vardır.
