THE VACCINE IS EFFECTIVE WHEN THE VIRUS IS MUTATED

Bursa Uludağ University (BUÜ) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Immunology, Professor. Dr. Barbaros Oral said that the mutations observed in the Covid-19 virus are normal, and even in this case, the developed vaccine will be effective.

With the "virus mutated" news from England last week, it was a matter of debate whether the vaccine developed will work or not. BUU Faculty of Medicine Vice Dean and Professor of Immunology Department. Dr. Barbaros Oral said, “We do not expect the last announced mutation and small mutations to be detected thereafter to negatively affect the efficacy of existing vaccines and antibody-based treatments. In addition, since coronaviruses do not mutate very rapidly, we anticipate that it will take a few years until the mutation that will cause antigenic drift (i.e. a radical change in the virus structure) develops and the epidemic can be controlled by using vaccines effectively during this period.
