GENERAL
INFORMATION
Parasitology
Department offers doctoral education as a graduate
program. Students successfully completing the courses
get Ph.D. degree in Parasitology. During the courses,
in addition to learning basics of parasitology,
students should follow the new trends in parasitology,
should be aware of the new literature, should plan
scientific projects according to their interests and
participate in research going on in the department.
Students also present an article and a seminar each
semester, during which they gain the knowledge and
skill on literature search and preparation and
presentation of a seminar.
Parallel
to the rapid developments in parasitological sciences,
reaching the information rapidly becomes more
important and
students learn how to reach the most correct
information by the least time consumption and use this
skill practically during the courses. Students are
encouraged to take responsibility in experimental
studies to improve their research interests and hand
skills. They take lectures from other departments in
an aim to widen their scientific vision and to get the
ability to evaluate subjects from different points of
view.
A
student who has completed the doctoral program at the
Department of Parasitology should have acquired
superior features regarding information, skill and
scientific vision.
RESEARCH
INTERESTS AND FACILITIES
Scientific
research has been concentrated in several main fields
in the Department of Parasitology. Particularly
current studies continue on epidemiology of endo and
ectoparasites of livestock and companion
animals;testing of both newly developed and
commercially available antiparasitic compounds against
a wide range of parasitic infections;anthelmintic
resistant nematodes in ruminants and horses, bee
diseas, house dust mites. The department has the
following research laboratories and facilities.
1)
Helmintology Laboratory:
The principle equipments are light, stereo and
inverted microscope, Mc Master Chambers, incubator,
centrifuges, deep-frezee
(-20oC).
2)
Protozoology and Arthropodology Laboratory:
The principle equipments are dessicator, incubator,
light, stereo, flourescent and inverted misroscope,
arthropod dissection set, experimental hives,
micropippets, deep-freeze (-80oC),
centrifuges.
