GENERAL INFORMATION
Biochemistry
Department offers doctoral education as a graduate
program. Students successfully completing the courses
get Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry. During the courses,
in addition to learning basics of biochemistry,
students should follow the new trends in biochemistry,
should be aware of the new literature, should plan
scientific projects according to their interests and
participate in research going on in the department.
Students also present an article and a seminar each
semester, during which they gain the knowledge and
skill on literature search and preparation and
presentation of a seminar.
We
aim bringing up the students who have PhD education in
Biochemistry Department planning projects on oxidative
stress and cancer/apoptosis issues which can
compete
in world standarts and making publications in
qualified journals such as Nature and also we intend
making our laboratory facility where students prefer
having PhD education.
RESEARCH
INTERESTS AND FACILITIES
Scientific
research has been concentrated in several main fields
in the Department of Biochemistry. Particularly
current studies continue on oxidative stress and
cancer/apoptosis. The department has the following
research laboratories and facilities:
1)
Research Laboratory:
Especially
projects on oxidative stress and antioxidant systems
are carried out in this laboratory. The principle
equipment in this laboratory are spectrophotometer,
HPLC system, centrifuges, pHmeter, an incubator,
sensitive scale, heater with magnetic mixer, vortex, a
water bath, automatic pipettes.
2)
Students Laboratory:
It
is used for students’ education and experiments.
3)
Apoptosis
and Cancer Research Laboratory:
Projects on apoptosis and cancer are carried out in
this laboratory. The principle equipment in this
laboratory is Microplate Reader analytical system.

DESCRIPTION
OF THE GRADUATE COURSES
TBK
DZ 01 Structure and Functions of
Proteins (2-2)3
Structure,
characteristics, reactions and classification of amino
acids; endogen synthesis and catabolism pathways of
amino acides; Structure of proteins and
classification, protein analysis methods are lectured.
Experimental applications are done to show amino acid
and protein reactions. In these lessons we aim making
the graduate to realise the proteins’
characteristics and functions in living organisms.
TBK
DZ 02 Enzyme Reactions and Enzyme Kinetics (2-2)3
In
living organisms, enzymes have very important roles.
Also they are very important parameters while
evaluating the patients’ clinic situation.
Understanding the enzymes structure, working
mechanisms and principles are very important in
evaluating the enzyme reactions in organism. In this
lesson, first we aim to lecture the enzyme structure,
principles of enzyme reactions, isoenzymes and their
importance, enzyme inhibition and then to study enzyme
assays, their importance in clinic diagnosis and
follow-up. In this contex, we aim to give lectures on;
1. Structure of enzymes and their characteristics, 2.
Principles of enzymatic reactions, 3. Concept of
co-factor and working pathways of different
co-factors, 4. Enzyme inhibition, 5. Control of enzyme
activity in body, 6. Concept of isoenzyme and its’
clinical applications, 7. Enzymes in clinic diagnosis,
8. Enzyme activity assesment techniques.
TBK
DZ 03 Lipids, Lipoproteins, Apolipoproteins,
Lipoprotein Metabolism Disorders (2-2)3
Lipids
are energy source of our body, but their excessive
levels results with atherosclerosis which causes
circulatory system diseases and mortality.
Lipoproteins carry the lipids in blood and have roles
in lipid metabolism. Aim of this lesson is learning
the lipoprotein synthesis, function, catabolism and
related disorders. Evaluation of lipid profile and
making connection with atherosclerosis is one of our
goal. Goals of these lectures are: Teaching the
structure and characteristics of lipoproteins, tissues
which lipoproteins originated from and alterations in
circulation, functions of lipoproteins, ıdentification
of lipoprotein metabolism disorders and their
mechanisms, concepts of free radical, antioxidant and
oxidative stress, risk factors of atherosclerosis ,
LDL oxidation, paraoxanase enzyme, obesity and
metabolic syndrome.
TBK
DZ 04 Carbonhidrate Metabolism: Major ve Minor
Metabolic Pathways (1-2)2
Structure
of carbonhydrates, related metabolic pathways and
regulations.
TBK
DZ 05 New Scientific Trends (1-0)0
Search,
review, presentation and discussion of recent
scientific trends about various subjects.
TBK
DZ 06 Literature Research and Transfer (1-0)0
Attendance
to weekly presentations and discussions of up-to-date
literature in the department, review and presentation
of recent literature according to special interest,
article searchin techniques, presentation of
experimental data in a seminar format.
TBK
DS 01 Endocrine System Biochemistry (2-0)2
Structure,
synthesis, secretion, metabolism functions of hormones
and endocrinologic tests and their usage in clinic.
TBK
DS 02 Programmed Cell Death (1-0)1
Apoptosis
is one of the most interesting research subjects in
last years and it is thought to have relation in the
pathogenesis of many diseases. The goal of this
lecture is to discusse the possible role of apopitosis
under the pathogenesis of diseases by the help of
current knowledge. First of all we will talk about the
terminology and accurate defination of apoptosis will
be described and also we will make clear the
difference between necrosis and apoptosis. Methods
used in detecting apoptosis will be mentioned.
TBK
DS 03 Oksidative Stress and Antioxidants (1-2)1
a.
To study structure, physical and chemical
characteristics, cellular sources and reactions of
free oxygen radicals
and clinic diseases which they play part in
organism.
b.To
study the function and structure of antioxidant
defense system enzymes (superoxide dismutase,
glutathion peroxidase, glutathion reductase,
catalase), macromolecules (ceruloplasmine,
transferrine, ferritine) and micromolecules (E
vitamine, C vitamine, A vitamine, uric acide,
bilirubin, oestogen).
TBK
DS 04 General Laboratory Techniques (0-2)1
The
aim of this lecture is giving instructions about
safety rules in laboratory, making solutions,
concentration calculations, making dilutions, usage of
sensitive scale for weighting chemicals, and pHmetry
as well.
TBK
